HADRIAN’S PATH (CHOLLERFORD TO BIRDOSWALD FORT), NORTHUMBERLAND, CUMBRIA

ENGLAND : This magnificent wall, stretching 73 miles across northern England, is one of Britain’s most iconic ancient monuments. Hadrian’s Wall, named after the Roman emperor that ordered it to be built between AD 122-1268, was also called this. Its original purpose is to separate the Romans, the “barbarian”, and the “barbarian Scottish Picts. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage property. It is flanked by 84-miles of fascinating museums and forts.

THE QUIRAING – ISLE OF SSKYE

ENGLAND : Quiraing, a landslip located in the wild terrain of northern Skye. It is known for its bizarre and beautiful rock formations, which are popular among photographers as well as geologists. Hiking is the best way of experiencing its complicated landscape. It’s possible to hike a 4-mile loop, which involves some climbing, but provides stunning views that make it worthwhile.

SCAFELL-PIKE, LAKE.

ENGLAND : The western side of Lake District is Wasdale. This is where most walkers start their journey to the summit. The summit is 977m high, but there’s another route. If you don’t wish to join a crowd, you can start in the scenic and less crowded northern side. For a longer hike, Borrowdale or Seathwaite are good options. This trail is also known as “Corridor Route”, and it runs nine miles through the valley below rocky walls, passing through ravines, before you reach Scafell Pike’s summit rock field. You can also find a list of top hikes in Lake District.

COAST to COAST, CUMBRIA NORTH YORKSHIRE

ENGLAND : The route covers 192 miles and runs from one coast to the other. Alfred Wainwright, British fellwalker and writer, devised it in 1973. He is best-known for his Lake District guides. He kept a bar tab at Whitby for all those who completed his walk. This is, of course, long past its use.

The trail takes you from St Bees Head (Ireland Sea) to Robin Hood’s Bay (North Sea). You’ll cross the Lake District as well as the Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors along the way. All three national parks on one route! The geology of the area changes as you walk. You can see red sandstone changing at St Bees and green slate at Honister. Other highlights include the picturesque Lakeland village Grasmere featuring the Wordsworth Museum or the 12th Century Shap Abbey.

CAUSEWAY COASTWAY COUNTY, COUNTY-ANTRIM

This spectacular, sea-sprayed walkway boasts some of the best cliff scenery anywhere in Europe. You’ll see the Giant’s Causeway’s basalt columns. This is the site of an ancient causeway which was constructed by a mythical Irish giant. The 33-mile trail that runs from Portstewart up to Ballycastle takes you through the coastal towns of Coleraine (Portstewart), Portrush and Portrush. It also passes Bushmills, an Irish whiskey distillery. The terrain is varied from causeway stone to grassy cliff edge trails, with some stiles.

YORKSHIRE TROOPS CHALLENGE, YORKSHIRE

The Yorkshire Dales offer some of the finest walking in the UK. You can complete this feat in one day by climbing the three highest mountains of the region. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which involves hiking 24 miles with more than 1,600m climbing and traversing Pen-y-Ghent Whernside, Ingleborough and Whernside in less than twelve hours, is no easy feat. There are amazing views from all three hills. You will also find fascinating geology like Pen-y-Ghent’s distinct sills: the lower one is limestone, the higher is gritstone. This walk is perfect for anyone who wants a challenge and doesn’t have the time.
