The 7 Best Autumn Travel Destinations for 2022

Fall travel is, without any doubt, the best kind. The fall weather is generally better than any other season. For example, I was in Croatia last week and it was 75 degrees in the afternoon and sunny the entire time.

Hopper reports that domestic average round-trip airfares in September and October have fallen 37% to $238. This is $142 less than summer round-trip domestic flights and 3% more than 2019 prices. The bottom line is that if airfare at an expensive price kept you from traveling for most of the summer, carpe diem.

Brandon Berkson, fortunately, knows a few things about travel. After being fired as a travel journalist, Berkson decided to focus his efforts on his hobby of creating an Instagram page for hotel lovers. This turned into a full-fledged media business that highlights the top restaurants, hotels, and other destinations worldwide. Hotels Above Par, the resulting product, is an “expert curated guide to some of the most cool boutique hotels and travel experiences in the world.” It has more than 155,000 followers across all its platforms.

It’s easy to understand why. Berkson has a finely tuned radar in travel trends. He also enjoys a passion for high-end and forward looking hotels. Berkson is the perfect choice to select the best autumn travel destinations. I was right to assume that (he did it well in spring). Below are his recommendations for an autumn getaway, whether it’s domestic or international.

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest, is a city that has many facets. There are many things that make Portland so special, such as endless forests and cool neighborhoods with hipsters and a thriving food truck scene.

Palisociety’s Hotel Grand Stark in Portland’s Central Eastside is where you should stay. The contemporary, minimalist interior of the boutique hotel, which has 57 rooms, pays homage to the Pacific Northwest. It features vintage and hunter-green accents in the lobby.

There are so many areas to explore in the city. My favourite neighborhoods include the Pearl District. Powell’s Books (A.K.A. “The Best Book Ever”) is located here. Nob Hill/NW 23rd Avenue is also a great area with cool shops and restaurants. Coffee shops are plentiful (Portland’s coffee scene has been outstanding).

Where to Eat. Kachka is a unique restaurant serving dishes that reflect the cuisine from the former Soviet Union. The vodka menu features more than 50 types of Vodka from different countries, including Russia and Moldova. This is one of my favourites.

Oceanside California

Oceanside, California, should be on your radar. It’s easy to get around, it’s affordable, but also burgeoning and fashionable. Here, you can escape the monotony of nearby beach towns like Laguna Beach or La Jolla. The city has been experiencing a revival over the past five- to seven years. There are more charming boutique hotels, cozy cocktail bars and farm to table restaurants popping up every day. Oceanside is a great place to surf if you are a surfer.

Where to stay: The Mission Pacific Hotel is just across the street from the beach. The hotel’s coastal style is casual yet sophisticated. For Top Gun lovers, the Graves House, featured in the original movie, is also located on the premises. The hotel converted the home into a dessert restaurant called The Famous High Pie.

What to do: Oceanside City Beach or Oceanside Pier makes for a perfect day on the beach during fall. The California Surf Museum provides historical insights on surfing, California’s most well-known sport.

Cococabana – A Caribbean-style restaurant and bar situated atop the newly opened boutique Bric

Madeira. Portugal

Madeira Island, Portugal ranks highly when it comes tagging destinations “having their moment”. With a new permanent direct flight starting in November, Madeira will be accessible from New York City to Funchal. So what is Madeira’s fall travel offer? This list could go on for days, with everything from 5-star accommodations to Michelin star restaurants and hiking trails that take you through its lush sea-facing mountains.

What to Do? The island is stunning from every angle, so hiking is a must. Madeira is home to over 200 Levadas. These are former irrigation ditches that have been converted into hiking trails. Funchal, home to many provincial shops and restaurants, is charming too.

Where to Stay : Reid’s Palace a Belmond Hotel is situated on top of a Atlantic Ocean-fringing Cliff. It’s a luxurious, seaside fortress.

Where to Eat – Reid’s Palace’s Michelin Starred William Restaurant is a great choice. It combines farm-totable cuisine with Portuguese elegance.

Barnard, Vermont

With its beautiful foliage, the Northeast United States area is one of best places in the globe to go fall-travel. Trees here stun visitors with their special-to-the-season yellow, gold, orange, and red leaves.

What to do? Enjoy the cool fall weather and take a walk through the forests of the region’s fallen-foliage forest. The perfect place for a romantic trip.

Where to Stay : Twin Farms Boutique Hotel is a Relais & Chateaux five-star hotel that has 20 rooms. It was the former country home of Sinclair Lewis (author) and Dorthy, his journalist wife. It’s all about letting go of any stress and worries you may have brought home. There are two options: a relaxing treatment at Bridge House Spa or a stroll through 300 acres where Twin Farms’ 18th-century farmhouse and its endless treescape.

Where to Eat. Twin Farms Chef Nathan Hill is responsible for the culinary creations. His menu features dishes that are made with farm-to–table ingredients. I recommend booking a Private Wine Cellar Dinner if you are planning on spending the evening with your significant others. You will enjoy a five-course gourmet dinner and wine pairings from the head sommelier.

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is a Southeast Asian paradise. Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a vibrant, multicultural metropolis. Here you will find delicious street food, gold shrines and boat-filled canals.

What to Do: The Grand Palace can be a sight for the eyes. The centuries-old site still hosts royal enclaves. Although the Thai royal family moved away in 1925, the regality is still prevalent), ceremonial spaces, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and other sacred places. Chatuchak Weekend Market is where you can shop. It’s the largest outdoor market in the world and hosts more than 15,000 vendors selling everything you need, including clothing, art, accessories, and home decor.

Where to Stay – Banyan Tree Bangkok is high-rise five-star hotel that offers an authentic slice of Thai luxury. (The hospitality and service are among the best in Southeast Asia). Every room and every suite at this hotel has its own bathroom and shower. It also offers extra living space which makes it feel more spacious. Relax at the hotel’s spa and enjoy the panoramic views of Bangkok.

Thai food is my favorite. In Bangkok’s old district at Samsong, you can indulge in Thai-style home cooking. It’s a family-owned and operated restaurant. Sukhothai noodles, rice noodles served with string beans or pork broth, is a must-order.

Amsterdam. The Netherlands

Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world. You will fall in love with the beautiful gingerbread-style houses, historical figures, canal-filled canals, chic boutiques, and bike-friendly streets.

Amsterdam is filled with many beautiful places. Holocaust education is important to me so I am always keen to recommend the Anne Frank House. If you’re a lover of art, I recommend the Van Gogh Museum as well as the Rijksmuseum. Vondelpark is a vast greenspace, perfect for a midday stroll.

Where to Stay? Choose Small Luxury Hotels of the World’s Canal House Amsterdam. This hotel has 23 rooms in three historic merchant homes. It is right by Keizersgracht, the main city canal.

Where to Eat Jansz Amsterdam serves modern bistro cuisine in a chic space overlooking the hotel’s canals. The Dutch Cheese Platter can be described as a cheese lover’s dream.

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

The Turks & Caicos archipelago is a remote place to find Caribbean seclusion for your fall travels. This is where you’ll find beautiful tropical landscapes and luxury hotels.

What to do? Take a Caicos Dream Tours Boat Tour. This will take you along the Caribbean Sea and allow you to snorkel alongside an abandoned vessel. It also allows you to witness the island’s numerous deserted islands. Iguana Island, a sanctuary full of roaming feral Iguanas, is one example.

Where to Stay – The Shore Club, Turks & Caicos – A five-star beachfront resort. The suites, with their island-esque decor and spaciousness and dreamy views over the Caribbean Sea, are perfect for those who want to “go luxe” while on fall vacation.

Where to Eat : Da Conch Shack is a Turks & Caicos institution. With its pink and white buildings and beachfront outdoor dining space, and a background of reggae music, you will fall in love the Caribbean. Their most famous dish is the conch fritters.
