Despite the crowds December is a fantastic time to travel. Christmas markets are abundant in Europe, especially in Nuremberg & Strasbourg. St. Lucia is a paradise for snowbirds from the north. Patagonia is blessed with some of the most beautiful weather throughout the year in December. New York City is a great place to spend the holidays.

You can find more winter travel ideas in our list of the top places to visit December.

Nuremberg in Germany

Europe’s Christmas market is one of the top attractions in December. Nuremberg is a great example of this. Bavaria’s small city hosts one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets. It is an annual fixture at the Hauptmarkt, and has been since at most the 1500s.

If you have the means, make sure to get to Germany by November 31st to witness the Nuremberg Christkind (a German gift-giving sprite based on Christmas fables). He will be giving a prologue in Main Market Square marking the opening day of the market the Friday before Advent.

Even if the event is cancelled, you will still be able enjoy Nuremberg’s Christmas market throughout the month of December. Get a bite of the famous gingerbread and bratwurst, then shop for wooden toys and knitted headwear, and finally, get some ornaments to decorate your Christmas tree. The carousel has a lot of fun for kids and adults.

New York City

New York City in December is like no other. The glass-and-concrete city takes on a winter wonderland vibe when the trees are adorned with twinkle lights and there is snow on the sidewalk.

Rockefeller Center, one of New York’s most popular attractions at this time of year, is an essential thing to do. It’s the site of New York City’s famous Christmas tree and an ice-skating track that has been around since 1936. The Christmas Spectacular holiday stage show features more than 140 Rockettes performers performing unison high kicks at Radio City Music Hall.

New York shopping peak season is December. Take a stroll down Fifth Avenue and see the holiday window displays. Then, stop by department stores Macy’s as well as Bloomingdale’s for gifts.

Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido offers legendary December ski slopes. Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island has been named one of the top places for snow. It’s not just any snow, it’s a special type of dry, fluffy “Japow” snow that has attracted a large following from powder hounds. Ski season opens in mid December, but can begin earlier if the weather is favorable.

Hokkaido offers many resorts to choose from for a December ski vacation. The most popular resort, Niseko, receives over 1,500cms of snow annually. Sahoro welcomes international guests and offers great tree skiing. Tomamu’s kitschy Japanese culture is an option for those who wish to get off the beaten path.

London, England

London sparkles in December. Literally. The whole city, especially Oxford Street and Regent Street, is decorated with holiday lights and decorations to give it a magical and romantic feeling. London’s Christmas events calendar makes it one the most exciting places in the world.

Tourists have the opportunity to witness the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonial on the first Wednesday of December. Winter Wonderland, located in Hyde Park, is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. This attraction features an observation wheel as well as amusement park rides, ice skates, and a gift marketplace.

You can walk a mile along the trail, which is lit by over a million lights to celebrate Christmas at Kew in the Royal Botanical Gardens. New Year’s Eve fireworks are held at the London Eye on Dec. 31st. Make sure to book tickets well in advance so you can enjoy a stunning view.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole in winter is the perfect place for snow bunnies. Ski season opens in mid-December and allows tourists to enjoy some of North America’s most famous trails. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s new beginner’s area offers first-timers engaging lessons by world-class instructors.

The Maldives are some of the most beautiful and picturesque islands in the world. This is especially true in December when there is lots of sunshine, warm temperatures, little rain, and the island is awash with beauty. This is the honeymooner’s paradise, with its high-end hotels and resorts. It’s possible to have an underwater suite, or a private bungalow overwater with a swimming pool. Stay at one of 26 Maldivian atolls.

Bangkok, Thailand

December is the best time to visit Bangkok. The monsoon downpours subside in November, which brings about cool and dry weather in Bangkok the following month. Evening temperatures should be in the low 20s Celsius. The mercury will peak at 32 degrees Celsius during the day.

To explore Bangkok’s best attractions, take advantage of the sunny weather. The Grand Palace should be visited. The palace is almost 250 years old and was used as a home for many Thai monarchs and their royal courts. It boasts an impressively ornate architecture. It also houses the sacred Emerald Buddha.

To see Wat Pho (the oldest temple in Bangkok), just south from the royal compound is Wat Pho. There, you can marvel at the famous 45-meter long reclining Buddha statue.

After visiting the tourist attractions, take in the vibrant atmosphere of this city. Khao San Road’s backpacker neighborhood is vibrant with music and street vendors selling souvenirs. It also has a lot of guesthouses. This is also where you can find the best street food Bangkok has to offer. Make sure to try the mango sticky Rice.
