The legend of Geronimo is a compelling one, and he deserves a spot in any Native American history book. Born in June 1829 in No-doyohn Canon, Arizona, Geronimo was a member of the Bedonkohe Apache tribe. He was the fourth of four children, and was known as Goyathlay (One Who Yawns). After years of evading capture, he was admitted to the Council of the Warriors, and almost 25% of the Army’s forces were assigned to find him.

During his life, Geronimo fought bravely and was regarded as a great warrior. Although his fights with whites were unsuccessful, his legend spread. His autobiography, published in 1905, led to an unsuccessful meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt, who attempted to help him get back to his native land. However, after four years, he was shot and killed while riding home in 1909. Afterward, his remains were displayed in Fort Sill.

In 1886, the U.S. government ordered the Apaches onto reservations. Despite the threat of U.S. military intervention, the Apaches fought back. His raids led to the forced relocation of thousands of Apaches from their homeland to a reservation in east-central Arizona.

He was a fearsome figure to authorities, and they feared him as much as he was feared. While evading the authorities, Geronimo was able to escape from the reservations and elude a quarter of the United States Army. This allowed him to survive, and he was the last Native leader to surrender to the federal government.
